Inclusion in Education: Speech-to-Text Interpreting Through School, Graduation & University
Another intensive and successful academic year 2025/2026 has concluded! At Sprachpilot, we look back with immense pride at the past months during which we accompanied deaf and hard-of-hearing students on their educational journeys.
Whether preparing for high school matriculation exams (Matura) in secondary schools or participating in demanding university lectures, our speech-to-text interpreters delivered live verbatim transcripts nearly every day. This allowed students to participate fully and follow classes effortlessly without auditory fatigue.
Milestones in Secondary Education: Graduation & Transitions
Throughout the 2025/2026 school year, we supported students across an extensive curriculum:
- Natural Sciences: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Humanities & Social Sciences: History, Geography, Philosophy & Ethics
- Creative Disciplines & Languages: German, English, Music Theory
- Business & Economics: Accounting, Business Administration
We are exceptionally proud of the deaf and hard-of-hearing students we supported throughout their final exam preparation, all of whom successfully passed their Matura graduation exams!
Other students completed intermediate qualifications and entered the professional workforce. We look forward to continuing our support for many returning and new students in the coming school year.
Challenging Academic Subjects in Higher Education
At universities and colleges of higher education, speech-to-text interpreting proved vital for lecture comprehension and seminar discussions. The subject areas covered during the semester were exceptionally diverse:
- Cultural & Social Anthropology: Complex sociological concepts and critical discussions.
- Household & Consumer Economics: Practical economic frameworks and statutory regulations.
- Mechanics & Applied Physics: Mathematical formulas and technical terminology transcribed with exact notation.
- Sports Science & Social Pedagogy: Combining empirical science with interactive seminars.

For deaf and hard-of-hearing learners, simultaneously lip-reading, listening, and taking comprehensive written notes is virtually impossible. With speech-to-text interpreting, speech is transcribed in real time and displayed instantly on laptops or tablets. After each class, students receive an edited transcript via email – an invaluable resource for exam revision!
Funded Accessibility Support in Austria
In Austria, educational speech-to-text interpreting is fully funded for eligible students. In secondary schools, services are financed through regional Education Directorates (Bildungsdirektionen). At universities, the coordination and funding are organized seamlessly via specialized service bodies like GESTU (Gehörlos erfolgreich studieren).
